tuning in to the cervix

How to Tune In to Your Cervix Naturally

Recently, I wrote about the need to discuss the cervix in a healthier and more loving way in my “Let’s Talk About The Cervix” blog post, especially after having cervical dysplasia a few years ago. It was a wake-up call to really tune in to my cervix with conscious awareness and reconnect with myself.

After all, the cervix is a source of ecstasy. She’s a deep, potent wellspring of emotion; an exquisite source of wisdom. She’s thought to be where Kundalini, the untapped energy that’s like a vast pool of creativity and the foundation for our consciousness, resides in women.

The cervix is our deep feminine essence.

But just like any muscle in our bodies, she can become tight, exhausted and even numb. Depending on our experiences in life, whether sexually, through childbirth or medical procedures, the cervix can be traumatised and distressed. She can hold on to old stories that no longer serve us.

In view of it being National Cervical Cancer Awareness Week from November 13 to 19, here are 15 effective and nurturing ways to tune in to your cervix and yourself.

Tuning in to the cervix

1. Breathe

Take some time to connect from the crown of your head or from your heart and breathe deeply into the pelvic area, especially between your root chakra and just below your navel, creating a radiant circuit of energy. If you have been feeling any disconnect, whether through health, low libido or have become creatively stuck, spend at least 20 minutes per day breathing into this area. Resting your hands on your pelvis, or massaging the area gently, can also help.

2. Embrace Orange

Wear, surround yourself with and/or visualise the vibrant colour of orange. Orange is normally associated with the sacral chakra, although some believe the cervix is more closely aligned to the root chakra, which is represented by red. I often visualise the sacral area as an orange rose or lotus flower in full bloom, especially when meditating.

Although it’s still important to eat your fresh, leafy greens, adding more orange and/or reddish coloured fruits and vegetables can also help. When in season, I tend to eat more organic mangoes, papaya and paw paw, as well as carrots, red capsicum and sweet potato.

Sometimes I also lie down and place an orange crystal, like carnelian or citrine, on my sacral chakra and breathe deeply.

3. Watch a Flickering Flame

Speaking of orange, light candles and simply watch the flame flicker, whether soaking in a bath or sitting on the couch. Again, breathe deeply into the pelvis. Personally, I’m a fan of pure, natural beeswax candles. Not only do they have a mesmerisingly tall flame, they give off a subtle honey scent and purify the air of viruses, mould and other allergens, making them a healthier choice all-round.

4. Engage the Root Lock

Squeeze and release the sex organs and anus. Similar to doing ultra-discreet pelvic floor muscle exercises, but when you release the contraction, let them relax. You can start off slowly, holding and releasing, then speed up or alternate the pace. In yogic terms, these are often known as mula bandha (or mula pumps). They can bring on yogasms.

5. Bathe

Swim or bathe in water, preferably sea water, mineral springs or a clean, flowing river. Alternatively, bathe at home with a sprinkling of pink Himalayan or river salts. However, if having a Cervical Screening Test (previously known as a Pap test), biopsy or any medical procedure, it’s best to avoid bathing (showering is fine but no douching whatsoever, which you shouldn’t do anyway) at least 48 hours before or 72 hours afterwards.

In the case of a surgical procedure — should you choose that path — it’s best to wait about six weeks after it has taken place.

6. Find Your Natural Rhythm

Get your groove on. Turn up the music and dance like no one is watching. Gyrate. Be a wild woman. Celebrate you. Whether it’s at home or at any one of the myriad dance classes out there, be bootylicious.

7. Earth Yourself

Sit on the grass or earth and feel the healing energy connect with you from your root chakra. This is one of the quickest, most natural and nourishing ways to recharge yourself. I tune in to nature as often as possible, be it earthing or walking barefoot.

8. Tune in to Your Inner Yogi

Do asanas (yoga postures), mudras (hand gestures) or pranayama (breathwork) that focus on the root and sacral chakras. This is where tantric and Kundalini yoga plus Sat Nam Rasayan (an ancient healing modality of Kundalini yoga that involves lots of powerful pranayama, mudras and meditation) can really help.

9. Take the Organic Approach

Avoid using tampons, condoms or lubricants that are chemically based. PERIOD. When needed, only use toxin-free and/or naturally made tampons. There are so many organic alternatives available for just about anything these days.

10. Become Crystal Clear

In the lead up to and after a Cervical Screening Test, I usually do a combination of any of the above. On the day of the test, I usually wear my blue Kyanite ring (good for aligning the chakras and absorbing negativity) and moonstone earrings, plus put a couple of other nurturing or feminine-type crystals in each of my bra cups. Then I breathe and focus on the pelvic area, before, during and after having the test.

I also go to a GP who is compassionate and is willing to take those extra couple of minutes for me to be ready. Also, rather than disconnect from the process, which can create tension and resistance in itself, I remain present to it.

11. Tune in to Your Natural Cycle

Given the tests, biopsies and surgery that I had for cervical dysplasia, it’s fairly standard that most medical practitioners will advise you to not have these tests when menstruating. But what I also learned from my experience is to listen to the natural rhythm of my own body.

For example, I noticed that if I had testing two days before or after my period, the cells were in a state of change or there was mucous with the sample, and so more biopsies were needed, or inconclusive results occurred, which can happen for a variety of reasons.

For me, I now choose to go after my mid-cycle (ovulation) and at least five days before my period is due. I’ve come to know myself much better, largely due to getting in touch with my cervix. Each woman is different, so find what works for you.

12. Embrace Your Free-Flowing Femininity

Generally speaking, I tend to wear non-synthetic clothing, including silk, bamboo or cotton made underwear. When I have a Cervical Screening Test, I deliberately wear something ultra-feminine. Not only does it feel lovely on the skin, it helps me align with myself.

For me, the clothes are always something comfy and flowy, like a long skirt or dress or wide leg pants, as opposed to slim fitting jeans, which can be more restrictive in terms of circulation. Basically, wear what makes you feel good.

13. Befriend Homeopathy

When I had the biopsies and subsequent surgery for the cervical dysplasia, I took anti-golden staph homeopathic drops made by a specialist naturopath and homeopath. I did this as a natural means of guarding myself against any risk of bacterial infection. I also took some Rescue Remedy drops after the biopsies and procedure to soothe the nervous system, especially if an anaesthetic was used.

14. Make Love

Make love with your beloved partner, or make love to yourself, really connecting and allowing yourself to be seen, cherished and embraced. Most of all, take your time, connect and be present. It can release

In the lead up to a Cervical Screening Test, colposcopy or surgical procedure, it’s best to avoid lovemaking at least 48 hours beforehand. Like bathing, depending on what test or procedure you have determines how long you need to abstain for afterwards.
